I looked around as we solemnly entered the funeral home. I gagged in disgust at the heavy alcohol and hand sanitizer smell. Flower petals where littered across the room and blew in a small tornado as the wind rushed in from outside. Flowers in vases lined the walls on small brown glass coffee tables. There was a plush leather couch that matched the walls which where a light hazelnut color. Then there where black plastic chairs stacked high on one wall. We traveled down the empty corridor to a room that was at the end. There where pictures and plaques with people and names in/on them. As we reached the door laughing, chatting, talking, and crying came from inside. My parents and I came from a hot New York City to a cool Mississauga, Ontario. I took a deep breath and my mom squeezed my shoulders and we stepped through. The walls where a brown color, flowers where on a table in the middle of the room! There was a picture album on a desk and a microphone on a small stage. There was a table with food and drinks. No one was over there though. I looked around and saw a group of kids over near another couch and adults were sitting in black leather chairs and adults where milling around the coffin which was at the other side of the room, which was dark brown with swirls going around it. It was an open coffin and I choked back tears as I looked at the face inside the brown coffin. I swallowed and stood tall and as Shira and Dansi came to meet us arms shaking and tears streaking down their face, there eye’s where puffy red I stayed strong! I looked down as my parent’s burst in to tears. Shira and Dansi hugged me fiercely. I looked away embarrassed and backed away slowly. Gathering in to the group other kids. I heard little snippets of talk and about the girl in the casket. I fidgeted around and my arm swung out and hit a girl. “ HEY! What the? Watch it!” she wailed. “Sorry” I mumbled. I walked away lonely and feeling more alone every minute that passed! I slowly shuffled over to the casket and… to my embarrassment… I burst in to tears. Then a quiet voice that sounded like my sister mixed with my mom whispered “ Hello Sam… How are you? Let it all out and then we shall talk!” I looked around but no one was there. I sighed and realized I was losing my mind. No scratch that I was imagining! Then the young girl I hit approached. “ Umm… Sorry ‘bout back there… I- I- I didn’t mean to make you…” She hesitated and then said quickly, “ Cry…”

  1. “ NO!” I screeched embarrassed. I angrily wiped away the tears and said… “ This is my sister, Diane” “ She took a, a, a, a vacation here and there was a car crash and she died…” “Oh… my… sorry…” She muttered. “ That’s okay…” I mumbled. “ So… my name’s Glen. What’s yours?” She questioned. “ Umm… Sam.” I said. “ Well, Sam it’s nice to meet you! Your sister was so nice. I only met her here. My older sister became good friends with her… She came over sometimes! They just didn’t tell us how she, died.” She said clearly. She said plainly. “ Ohh… well… yes, nice to meet you! A friend to my dear sister is a friend to me!” I said happily. “ SAM! COME ON! WE HAVE TO GO!” My mom yelled. I ducked, exposed, as people looked my way! I streaked toward them, and then paused. “ Wait! Please can I have your phone number?” She nodded shyly and wrote her number down. I got a good look at her then she was PRETTY! Dark, green, eyes. Dark brown wavy hair! With a white flower clipped in her hair! I realized I was staring and looked away as she handed me her number! “ Thanks… Well, Bye…” I mumbled. “ Yes, bye!” She smiled back at me! I backed away and practically ran out of the door, grinning from ear to ear!
